Brazil has a long, rich winemaking heritage known the world over. The history of the Brazilian grape-growing and winemaking industry began in 1875, when Italian immigrants settled in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the south of Brazil. Heirs of a long-standing tradition in cultivating grapes and producing wine, these immigrants soon had significant economic impact upon the country: as early as 1884, more than 8 million litres of Brazilian wine were already being produced in the region.
